Steampower

A History of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops

For over 100 years Eveleigh was home to New South Wales rail assembly and maintenance. A lot can happen in one hundred years. This video chronicles the life of Eveleigh from its early days repairing imported steam rolling stock, through the golden age of steam power innovation, the introduction of dieselisation, and the slow decline and eventual closure of the yards.

But Eveleigh was more than a railway workshop. Employing thousands of men and women from a range of cultures, Eveleigh was the heart and soul of the NSW railways - not to mention the breeding ground of political ambition.
